Steering, not Rowing

As the name suggests, a Steering Committee helps to steer a project through from start to completion.

Although in practice the role is complex, its principle purpose is to ensure the project and any changes that need to be made stay true to the objectives of the performing organisation.

What will I learn?

The role of project governance is to provide a decision making framework that is logical, robust and repeatable to govern an organisation’s capital investments. In this way, an organisation will have a structured approach to conducting both its business as usual activities and its business change, or project, activities.

This course addresses the knowledge, processes and techniques necessary to strategically lead projects, including how to:

  • clarify the roles and responsibilities of the project’s sponsor and steering committee
  • provide direction and support to projects as an executive and/or sponsor
  • represent and engage with stakeholders throughout, managing expectations
  • manage the intersections between business as usual and project culture in delivering innovation
  • identify and proactively respond to conflict, and
  • critically analyse complex issues and make optimal decisions.

What are the benefits?

This workshop is highly interactive, and our semi-structured approach is dynamically responsive to the experience, needs and operating environment of the participants.

Participants are therefore encouraged to share complex, ‘real life’ examples from their professional experience that can be resolved using the best-practice principles of project management.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • develop steering committee terms of reference
  • triangulate multiple, complex sources of information
  • critically analyse and interpret data
  • apply problem-solving skills to new initiatives in the project management context
  • manage conflicts of interest, and
  • perform governance duties in accordance with organisational constitution, codes of conduct, legislation and internal policies and procedures

How much does it cost?

We work with our clients in a number of capacities including on a negotiated hourly, daily or a fixed rate basis.

Corporate clients are usually charged a fixed fee, as opposed to a per participant rate; although a cap may be placed on participant numbers (usually 25 people per workshop) to guarantee optimum levels of interaction.

At present, we do not offer individual (public) seats on our corporate Masterclasses.

The City of Launceston plays a critical role in the delivery of local services and infrastructure, to ensure the ongoing needs of our local communities continue to be met.

With an annual capital budget in excess of $20m and a further operational budget of almost $100m per year, Council has a vast number of projects to be implemented each year. The Cradle Coast Authority (CCA) is a joint authority created by the nine councils of North West Tasmania to facilitate the sustainable development of the region, resolve regional issues and coordinate regional-scale activity. This activity spans local and regional approaches to economic and community development as well as tourism  and natural resource management.

A core priority for the CCA is to build workforce capability within the region, including within its member Councils and other economic and community development professionals.
