Entry requirements

Entry is open to all graduates of the Institute of Project Management’s BSB41515 Certificate IV in Project Management Practice.

As our Certificate IV program is intentionally designed to articulate into this Diploma, candidates with an equivalent qualification from another provider should contact us to determine if a gap assessment is required.

How do I get this qualification?

In order to demonstrate their competence as a Project Manager, Diploma candidates are required to identify a complex public or private project that has recently completed and conduct a comprehensive review of its performance.

In order to meet the minimum threshold of complexity, the project you review must involve:

  • A delivery team of three (3) or more people (including the project manager)
  • Detailed project documentation at all stages
  • Formal governance structure (for example, a sponsor and/or steering committee)
  • Multiple stakeholder relationships

Students who are unable to access a project to review should contact us to assist in identifying an appropriate case to study.

The final output will take the form of a hypothetical consultant’s report commissioned by the Board of Directors of the performing organisation, and be aimed at recommending improvements for the firm’s performance of future projects.

In addition to common requirements for business writing, the Review should address the following:

  • Project assets, including (but not limited to):
    • project initiation documentation (for example: a project business case; project charter)
    • project planning documentation (for example: a project stakeholder register; work breakdown structure; Gantt chart; budget; position descriptions; risk register; communications plan)
    • project delivery documentation (for example: project status reports; change requests; issues register)
  • Project performance, including (but not limited to):
    • planned versus actual performance to scope, schedule and budget
    • stakeholder identification and communication
    • business case development
    • scope definition and management
    • schedule development and control
    • cost estimating and control
    • risk identification, prioritisation and treatment
    • human resource availability and performance
    • quality planning and control
    • procurement / contract management
    • project governance and change control
    • project delivery and handover
    • other lessons learned

At a minimum, you would be expected to conduct one-on-one interviews with the project manager, project sponsor and a client representative. Other project stakeholders should also be consulted. This can be done using a variety of methods, including interviews, workshops and surveys.

For assessment purposes, the Review must be at least 2,000 words in length. The word count does not include footnotes, references and/or appendices. The executive summary must not be more than 10% of the overall word count.

You will then be required to make a 30-minute Oral Defence of your Project Review to complete this assessment activity. This Defence simulates a Board level interrogation of your Review conclusions and its recommendations – it is not an oral presentation of your findings (eg PowerPoint).

You will be contacted directly to schedule your presentation once your written report has been assessed.

In order to successfully complete these assessment tasks, you will need to be familiar with larger issues, such as the project management frameworks, theories and best practice; more importantly, you need to have a deep understanding of the project you have reviewed and the major issues encountered.

Lifetime enrolment means that once you enrol, there is no time deadline to complete your course requirements – you can submit assessment tasks anytime from 6 days, 6 years to 6 decades after your commencement.

Unlike other programs, we also do not charge any fees to re-submit an assessment task.

Students are guaranteed unlimited re-submission and unlimited feedback for all assessments.

Accreditation means that the IPM Diploma of Project Management has been audited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and is compliant with the Standards for VET Accredited Courses and the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

It also certifies that the skills and knowledge gained are nationally recognised, regardless of where the training was undertaken, and that they are recognised across businesses and in all states and territories.

That depends on where you work…

In 2015, the median salary for a project manager in Australia was AU$139,037 per year – in the USA, it was US$108,000.

Interestingly, having even a basic certification or qualification in project management added around 20% to the value of of an individual’s salary.

The best country to work as a project manager is Switzerland (Australia is ranked #2, and the USA is #3), while the worst is Egypt. If you want to know what a project manager usually earns in your country, just ask us!

Our courses do not make you wait until a fixed date, such as the start of a semester, before allowing you to commence your course. Study can begin as soon as your enrolment is processed, usually within 24 hours!

Even if you are enrolled in a facilitated workshop, access to online study materials and your Microsoft Project licence is immediate.

At any time throughout your Qualification you may also request a Statement of Attainment, which is formal recognition of the units that you have completed. Each AQF unit that you complete is fully recognised and transferable for credit within the Australian Vocational Education system.

Each activity, unit or module in your qualification is continually assessed as you progress through the course.

Your mentor will give you detailed feedback on each item. If he or she feels that you are not yet competent in an area, then you will be advised on how you can improve your work for reassessment.

There is no limit to the number of times you may reattempt an assessment task – we will stick with you until you get it right!

All email enquiries are responded to within two business days, and the turnaround for assessment feedback is usually within five days.

We also encourage you to look for answers beyond the scope of the learning material, either from within your own experience, your workplace, or on the web. This will make for a richer learning experience and a more fulfilling progression through the course.

Successful completion of the assessment tasks will demonstrate to us (and your present and future employers) that you have the ability to apply the theory you have learnt to practical workplace scenarios.

Note that although assessment tasks are made easier if you are employed in a workplace, those without this opportunity may complete the course as long as they have sufficient access to a project environment to facilitate learning and demonstrate competence.

Past experience indicates that the time you spend on study is positively correlated with your performance and results in this course. You should allow up to 200 hours in order complete this qualification.

This includes the time for developing a review plan, reading relevant documentation, conducting stakeholder interviews, undertaking independent research, liaising with your mentor and presenting your findings.

You should ensure you are able to allocate the required amount of time before commencing study.

Because every learning experience is unique, at IPM we customise our offerings to uniquely match your circumstances. We take into account your current employment and experience, as well as a range of personal considerations, such as your general interests, ambitions, availability, motivation and financial situation.

For example, if you have already delivered projects or programs of work, either in paid employment or as a volunteer, the skills you’ve developed are probably very valuable. You may have done other studies that include similar subjects, here or overseas. Even some of your hobbies and interests might include relevant skills and knowledge.

To be recognised, you need to prove you are already competent in that study area. If you have just left school, don’t do part-time work or have many interests, you may not be a candidate for skills recognition. If you are an older person with a wide range of successful work and study experiences, you are probably a very strong candidate.

If your skills can be “recognised” (ie mapped to unit and course criteria), you may be able to shorten the length of time for your studies. In some cases, you may get 100 per cent recognition of your qualification, meaning you would not have to study at all.

As our qualifications are delivered and assessed in English, students who reside in a country where English is not the primary language, and others for whom English is a second language, are expected to have English language competence as a pre-requisite to enrolment.

You can demonstrate this by providing evidence that you have completed an English language proficiency exam to the Australian government’s skilled migration standard for Vocational English.

As a rule, students with English language, literacy and/or numeracy special needs should contact us prior to enrolment to confirm their suitability for the program of study.

The cost of this qualification varies depending on the pathway you follow into it and the assessment approach.

You can either pay online when you complete the enrolment form, in instalments by prior arrangement, or request an invoice (if, for example, you would like your employer to pay on your behalf).

Our mentors and assessors are highly experienced project leaders with a minimum of ten (10) years’ practical experience, a Masters of Business Administration (or equivalent degree), and an appropriate teaching qualification.

What’s next?

Students who successfullly complete the IPM Diploma of Project Management are guaranteed admission to Western Sydney University in their Bachelor of Business program.

They are also guaranteed at least one full-time semester’s equivalent of academic credit, fast-tracking their degree by six months.

A number of other Australian and international Universities offer similar pathways.

The IPM Diploma of Project Management has also been pre-assessed by the Australian Government as meeting the educational requirements for a number of skill-shortage, migration eligible occupations.
